Overview: The photography courses at SRISA offer opportunities for both beginning and advanced students to explore the city of Florence through the medium of photography.   Beginning students develop the basic field, studio and darkroom skills of 35 millimeter black and white photography; while intermediate and advanced students may explore such issues as experimental, digital or documentary photography.  These courses provide a framework to encourage students to develop as artists and to interact with their new visual landscape. 

Courses: SRISA offers a variety of courses ranging from basic black and white photography to more advanced courses that explore experimental processes, color and digital photography, documentary photography and the development of advanced independent projects.  Courses in the history of photography broaden students' understanding of the range and development of the medium in both Europe and North America while familiarizing them with the cultural discourses of contemporary photography.

Instruction & Classroom structure: All photography classes combine practical hands-on demonstration, in-class critique, along with illustrated classroom lectures on contemporary photography.  Emphasis is given to the exploration and development of a personal visual language.

Facilities:
Photography
: 6 Durst and 3 Omega enlargers, including Durst 5" x 7" and Omega D-2, 4" x 5" format.  Darkroom is fully air conditioned with full ventilation and air exchange unit, island developing sink 1 x 2.5 meters. Production area has 6 film developing stations, large tables and counters, electric film dryers, electric RC paper dryer, 50cm X 180cm light table, 3 Dahle paper cutters, silver recovery unit, film processing area fully ventilated. Critique and production areas  are suitable for up to 14 students.
Digital Imaging: Fully equipped Macintosh lab with G-4 & G-5 machine, 2 Epson flatbed scanners, slide scanner, Epson projectors, Ethernet & Airport networks, ASDL Internet connections, Canon 450i Camcorder, Nikon CoolPix 995, CoolPix 4300, CoolPix 4500 digital cameras, Epson Laser printer, Canon S6300 A3 format inkjet printer. Software includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator, InDesign, Painter, Final Cut Pro, Dreamweaver MX, various word processing, and other common software applications.

Supplies: All students in darkroom photography must bring a 35mm camera that can be operated manually. Darkroom facilities include chemicals, and all necessary classroom equipment. 

Course fees and lab information

All photography courses require that student bring a 35mm camera that has a manual setting. In addition students will be responsible for purchasing film and photographic paper.

Students bringing digital cameras should also bring a card reader for downloading images.

It is recommended that students purchase a jump drive (mini hard drive) for saving files and images.
