PROF. ANDREW SMALDONE MA
SRISA Full Professor of Fine Arts and Academic Dean

BIOGRAPHY

Andrew Smaldone completed an MA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London in 2005, and a BA with honors from The George Washington University, Washington D.C. in 2001, where he was awarded the four-year Presidential Arts Scholarship.  In 2005, he co-founded ArtSEEN Journal and was the magazine’s Senior Editor until 2008, whereupon he began writing for various international contemporary art publications including London based Art Review.  In 2011 he co-founded the contemporary art magazine Fisk Frisk where he is the Editor-at-Large.
Smaldone has shown his art widely in the US, Europe, and the UK.  Winner of the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2015, Professor Smaldone’s new works explore both surface and space, a process he initiated in 2005 during his studies at Central St. Martins College of Art in London.  Working within this fluid space brings awareness into a long-term and on-going discourse concerning: the “non-space”. This awkward terminology shows his attempt to describe in words an awareness of something that is present, yet not usually seen, nor is it tangible, thus it is not an “absence” as such of space, yet more alike a fullness of its opposite aspect. As Smaldone describes, it is like penetrating through the wall to observe it form the inside of itself.

Smaldone has been teaching painting, drawing, and contemporary art theory at SRISA since 2007 and was appointed Academic Dean in 2012.
