nude and costumed models, the compositional context of
the figure and individual form development are studied.

demonstrated and the instruction is approached on an
individualized basis. Materials used in the course are
acrylics, oils, pastels, watercolors, canvas, and
Figure painting is intended to introduce the student to
the pleasures and problems particular to painting the
human figure from life. To this end, painting from
observation is stressed using both the nude and clothed
model. Compositional context as well as the formal
concerns specific to the individuality of the human
figure is stressed.
Acrylics, oil, ink, canvas and paper are used. Our
studio sessions are augmented by museum trips and
particular attention is given to the examination of the
Macchiaioli painters at the Pitti Palace, the sculpture
of the Bargello and the Museo Opera del Duomo.
Students are encouraged to work as a team. Class and
individual projects are designed to encourage a
positive group dynamic through which students learn
from each other as well as from the instructor.
