The video (1 hour long, made of 7 little videos) is a rhythmic editing of the daily shooting of the last 2 years. Since 4 years Stefania is carrying a little camera with her always ready to shoot the craziest situations she runs into by chance, or just stealing a reality that becomes something else through the editing.
People working out, wedding pictures, collective myths, an elephant walking down the street, fat people eating huge sandwiches, rich people eating at the openings, the stadium, the baseball game, the Italian-American religious procession in east Harlem, jazz musicians, naked people on the beach, kids diving from a tall pole, "beachy fires" in Africa, old people walking, old people dancing, a horse carried by a vespa...

The 24th of January the video will be presented in different places all around the world. In each place people that Stefania met in the last years, are going to take care of it in many different ways, showing it in bars, galleries, restaurants or their own house.

"Il giro del mondo in sette video"

L’opera Humans è composta da 7 video in cui i frammenti di varie situazioni, che si svolgono in vari luoghi del mondo, vengono associati in un'unica narrazione senza cesure. E’ il tentativo di realizzare un ritratto dell’uomo dopo l’avvento di internet e del digitale mettendo in evidenza la parzialità e l’effimerità del momento dello sguardo. L’artista rispetto alla possibilità di essere ovunque e da nessuna parte per mezzo della navigazione in internet propone un’attenzione all’intensità dei momenti. Celebra momenti e istanti tutti simili e tutti diversi tra loro come persone che mangiano un panino, amici alle inaugurazioni di mostre d’arte, gli stranieri in terra loro. In questo senso, se confrontato con il progetto ambizioso di Edward Steichen per la mostra the family of man realizzata nel 1955 con ritratti di persone da più di 50 paesi diversi, si rivela essere una domanda aperta su cosa intendiamo oggi per rappresentazione, sul ruolo del fotografo e sul relativismo delle immagini nella nostra società. Il video è uno scorrere veloce di immagini che non vuol solo mettere in evidenza i luoghi attraversati dall’artista in prima persona, ma far porre l’attenzione a quei particolari che ci sfuggono quotidianamente nella nostra normale vita. Il suo intento è di alzare il livello e la capacità di analizzare le immagini senza accettarle a prescindere in maniera passiva. Come per altri lavori precedenti dell’artista anche in questo caso è l’inaspettato o il momento surreale che si fa chiave di lettura per vedere il reale come per la prima volta. Questi aspetti però non vogliono portare lo spettatore ad astrarsi dalla quotidianità, ma proprio a rivalutarla e a osservarla e praticarla sotto una nuova concretezza.
Al fine di mettere meglio in evidenza tutti questi aspetti del lavoro di Stefani Galegati è stata concepita nel presentare alla galleria Srisa in via san gallo 53r Firenze un allestimento adatto all’occasione. Il film, diviso per sette capitoli, sarà visibile su sette differenti schermi che produrranno lo stesso effetto di tante caotiche città di babele per poi però portarci attraverso la sua particolare “narrazione per immagini” a dare attenzione all’epifania e l’intimità con cui scoprire l’altro e il suo modo di manifestarsi al mondo. Infatti potremmo dire parafrasando le parole di Amleto che sono immagini causali ma che c’è una logica in questa casualità, ed è un tipo di logic da prendere in considerazione.

"Around the world in seven videos"

The work Humans is a series of seven videos, fragments of situations in numerous places all over the world linked together in one continuous narrative presented without censure. The videos are an attempt to provide a portrait of man after the advent of the internet and digital media, bringing to light the subjective and ephemeral quality of the visual act of seeing. Having considered the idea that we can be everywhere and nowhere through internet navigation, she draws attention to the intensity of singular moments. She celebrates moments and instances, all similar but each quite different such as people eating sandwiches, friends at an art opening, foreigners in their own land. In this sense, if compared to the ambitious project of Edward Steichen in the exhibition the family of man (1955), a series of portrait photographs taken in over 50 countries from around the world, the work opens a dialog on what we mean now by representation, on the roll of the photographer and on the general relativism of images in our society.
The videos are a series of quickly changing images that not only narrate the travels of the artist around the globe, but also bring our attention to the small details often overlooked in our own lives. The artist’s goal is to heighten our skills in the analysis of images without passively accepting them. As in other works by the artist, the unexpected or surreal moment is used as the key to reading the real, as though for the first time. The goal is not the abstraction of quotidian life but rather of its reevaluation, an encouragement to observe and engage in daily life with a new sense of sustainability.
With the scope of highlighting the many aspects of Stefania’s work, an instillation was conceived in the SRISA gallery on Via San Gallo that was suitable to occasion. The video divided into seven different chapters will be shown on seven different screens that together produce a series of chaotic cities of Babel to then draw us into her “narration through images”, to give attention to the epiphany, to the intimacy to discover humans and their way of displaying themselves to the world. Paraphrasing Hamlet, you might say that the images are random, but that there is logic in their randomness.
