Jean Grundy Fanelli was born in Lincoln, England, and has lived in Italy for many years. She received her BMus, MMus, and PhD from London University, England. Musicological research has mainly been on Baroque vocal music in Tuscany and on music and the Medici family. She was awarded grants from Music and Letters scholarship fund; the Irwin fund and Isobel Thornhill Bequest Funds of University of London, as well as two grants from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Rome.

She has taught creative writing, opera, and Renaissance music at a variety of university programs in Italy and is the author of numerous academic articles, six books of musical studies, the latest Opera for Everyone (2004, Scarecrow Press, USA), and a novel, The War Comes to Witham Street (2004, Mushroom books, Bath, UK). She is a member of the British Society of Authors and one of the founding members of the Italian branch and is presently writing a book on comic opera and a novel set in Tuscany.
